Zone 0 is inside the bath or shower. Any fitting used in this zone must be low voltage, (max 12v) and be rated at least IP67 which is total immersion proof.

Zone 1 requires a minimum rating of IP45 but it is generally accepted that IP65 is to be used.

Zone 2 (60 cm width) an IP rating of at least IP44 is required.

Outside Zones are anywhere outside zones 0,1 and 2 there are no special IP requirements in this zone, however, we suggest to use a light with an IP rating of at least IP20.

This information should be used for guidance only. Always refer to the current IEE Wiring Regulations or a qualified electrician to ensure that you are guided by the latest codes of practice.

INTRODUCTION

When it comes to choosing lighting for your home or business, it's essential to consider the IP (Ingress Protection) rating. The IP rating measures the level of protection that a light fitting provides against the intrusion of solid objects, dust, and water.

In the UK, IP ratings are an essential consideration for outdoor lighting, bathroom lighting, and other areas where moisture and water are present. At Inspyer Lighting, we understand the importance of choosing the right lighting for your needs, so we've created this guide to help you understand IP ratings and choose the best lighting for your requirements.

IP RATINGS EXPLAINED

The IP rating is made up of two numbers. The first number indicates the level of protection against solid objects, such as dust and debris. The second number indicates the level of protection against water.

IP ratings for lights in the UK typically range from IP20 to IP68, with higher numbers indicating greater protection. Here's a breakdown of what each number means:

·      IP20: This rating provides protection against solid objects larger than 12.5mm in diameter, such as fingers. It offers no protection against water.

·      IP44: This rating provides protection against solid objects larger than 1mm in diameter, such as wires, and splashing water. It is suitable for use in certain bathroom areas, for more information about about the IP requirements for different bathroom areas please see our Bathroom Lighting Zones section of the FAQs.

·      IP65: This rating provides protection against dust and low-pressure water jets from any direction. It is ideal for outdoor use.

·      IP67: This rating provides protection against dust and immersion in water up to 1m for 30 minutes. It is suitable for use in swimming pools and other wet areas.

·      IP68: This rating provides protection against dust and continuous immersion in water. It is suitable for use in fountains, ponds, and other water features.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT IP RATNG

When choosing lighting for your home or business, it's essential to consider the environment in which the light will be used. For example, if you're looking for outdoor lighting, you'll want to choose a light with an IP65 rating or higher to ensure it can withstand the elements.

If you're looking for bathroom lighting, an IP44 rating is a good choice as it provides protection against splashing water. For swimming pools and other wet areas, an IP67 or IP68 rating is necessary to ensure the light can withstand immersion in water.

OTHER FACTORS TO CONIDER WHEN CHOOSING AN OUTDOOR LIGHT

In addition to the IP rating, you should also consider the material and construction of the light fixture. Look for fixtures made of durable, weather-resistant materials such as aluminum or stainless steel. Also, consider the placement of the fixture and the direction of the light to ensure maximum visibility and safety.

CONCLUSION

IP ratings are an essential consideration when choosing lighting for your home or business. By understanding the different IP ratings and choosing the right rating for your needs, you can ensure your lights are safe and functional in their intended environment. At Inspyer Lighting, we offer a range of lighting options with different IP ratings to suit your needs. If you have any questions or need help choosing the right lighting, please don't hesitate to contact us.

INTRODUCTION

Many Integrated LED light fittings produced by manufacturers will be advertised as dimmable, which is an attractive option, especially when buying decorative pendants, chandeliers and wall lights. However, where dimming LEDs is concerned, the term “dimming” is fairly generic and several options will be available, depending on which dimming protocol the manufacturer decides works best on their products.

This is a basic guide to some of the terminology you may encounter when trying to find the perfect, dimmable light for you. This information is provided as a reference and should be discussed further with a qualified electrician to establish whether the dimming options available are compatible with the cabling and switching you have in place.

As the dimmable LED driver, supplied by the manufacturer with their fittings, will be specific to the type of dimming protocol advertised, the type of cable installed in the property is very important to understand. Where the opportunity to run new cable exists, this will be less of an issue, of course, but where replacing cables is not an option, you should proceed with caution and consult a qualified electrician to establish what type of cable you currently have in place.

DIFFERENT DIMMING TYPES

Mains Dimming (TRIAC/Trailing Edge)

The most common method used to dim integrated LED fittings and requires no additional live or control cable. As the vast majority of UK properties will be wired with 3 core cable (live, neutral, and earth), this type of dimming protocol is usually ideal.

Cable Requirement: 3 core

Dimmer Requirement: Most TRIAC or Trailing Edge compatible dimmers

PUSH Dimming (Switch Dim)

A dimming method using a simple retractive (non-latching) switch. The driver for this type of dimming protocol requires a ‘control’ cable in addition to the main supply cables, the minimum cable requirement is 4 core. This type of cable is uncommon in existing UK properties and where new cable is not being installed, PUSH dimming will not be appropriate (unless you only wish to use the light in an On/Off capacity).

Cable Requirement: Min. 4 core

Dimmer Requirement: Retractive Switch

1-10V / 0-10V Dimming (Analogue)

1-10V / 0-10V dimming is the simplest dimming protocol for lighting, providing smooth operation and dimming down to very low levels. Dimming is often smoother and lower than mains dimming options but, as with PUSH dimming, it also requires a separate ‘control’ cable to be run from the dimmer to the fitting’s driver. Again, this type of cable is uncommon in existing UK properties and where new cable is not being installed, 0-10V dimmable fittings will not be appropriate (unless you only wish to use the light in an On/Off capacity).

Cable Requirement: Min. 5 core

Dimmer Requirement: 0-10V compatible dimmers

DALI Dimming (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface)

A DALI system consists of a controller connected to a network where every DALI LED driver and dimmable LED bulb is assigned a unique address so they can be operated individually. Using a two-way method, the system enables the user to communicate with LED drivers and ballasts, and vice versa, via a DALI controller, which is typically a computer based lighting control system or DALI compatible dimming controller, often Bluetooth enabled. The digital signals are transmitted through a two-wire control wire in addition to the main supply and requires cable with a minimum of 5 cores. Again, this type of cable is uncommon in existing UK properties and where new cable is not being installed, DALI dimmable fittings will not be appropriate (unless you only wish to use the light in an On/Off capacity).

Cable Requirement: Min. 5 core

Dimmer Requirement: DALI lighting control system or DALI compatible dimmers

Casambi Dimming (Bluetooth Enabled)

Casambi is a Bluetooth enabled dimming solution which allows wireless control of your lighting via communication between the light source, fitted with the Casambi driver module, and the Casambi App.

Casambi is offered as a pre-installed option by some manufacturers on certain lights. Casambi modules are also available for purchase separately which means is that, regardless of whether you have the correct cable in place, it may be possible to find a dimming solution for light fittings with only PUSH, 1-10V/0-10V or DALI compatibility, with minimal additional hardware and deployment costs.

The light fitting can only be switched on/off from your existing wall switch but can then be dimmed via the Casambi App which you simply download onto your device. Alternatively you can purchase a separate Casambi enabled wireless dimmer control / switch enabling your light fitting to be dimmed from the wireless dimmer and/or the Casambi App.

Cable Requirement: 3 core

Dimmer Requirement: Casambi App (and standard wall switch/dimmer) or Casambi App and Casambi Dimmer
