Behind the Brand: Anglepoise

Behind the Brand: Anglepoise

Believe it or not, the iconic lighting brand Anglepoise was founded by a  vehicle suspension engineer back in 1932. His name was George Carwardine and he invented a spring mechanism that could be repositioned with even the lightest of touches, yet it cleverly upheld its position once released. With that, the first Anglepoise lamp was created and has been going strong ever since! Even now, their desk lamps remain true to Carwardine’s original design, whilst still meeting the demands of modern life.

Nowadays, the brand is recognised in over 50 countries, yet it remains fundamentally British. So British, in fact, that in 2009 the original lamp featured on a Royal Mail stamp, alongside other iconic British symbols, such as a red double decker bus and a London Underground map. What’s more, the Roald Dahl Museum features a larger than life version of the author’s very own original Anglepoise lamp. This version in the museum was the brand’s first giant lamp!

Since its creation, the brand has collaborated with a variety of renowned designers, including Paul Smith and Margaret Howell, to improve and enhance the designs. They produce a variety of practical, energy-efficient task lamps, floor lamps, desk lamps, pendants and wall lights. Anglepoise lighting can be found in homes, restaurants, offices, hotels, student accommodation and a variety of other commercial and residential environments.

If you have any questions about Anglepoise, or any of the other brands featured on our website, we’d love to hear from you. Lighting is an important aspect of any building, so it might be worth getting in touch with one of our lighting designers, who would be happy to discuss your project requirements with you.
