The Tubular Balance Suspension Light from Ingo Maurer is a unique, award-winning hybrid luminaire designed by Sebastian Hepting in 2021. Operating at the intersection of a pendant light and a table lamp, it relies on a gravity-defying counterweight system that eliminates the need for an electrical ceiling outlet. The lamp hangs from the ceiling on a thin, nearly invisible steel thread. Instead of hardwiring to the ceiling, a colorful textile cable drops down to tie around a heavy table base that functions as a structural counterweight. Drawing artistic inspiration from a ship's mooring lines wrapped around a marine bollard, the textile loop gracefully wraps around its table stand before directing upward to support the light. The main body consists of a high-grade borosilicate glass tube. It can be manually rotated a full 360 degrees within its cable loops, transforming it from a precise task downlight into a soft, indirect wall washer or ambient uplight. Because it draws power by plugging directly into a standard wall socket, it can be freely positioned anywhere in a room regardless of where junction boxes are located.
